Purpose

The purpose of this task is to define a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) applications and services development plan containing specific recommendations for different application domains and for each region, that will lead to to the penetration of EGNOS in the short-term and Galileo in the long term. Significantly, this plan will enable the subsequent production of more detailed Regional Plans for the GJU.

The Plan

The plan forms the foundation of the rest of the study, insofar as it identifies:

  • Previous and ongoing pilot and demonstration activities related to applications and international activities that may potentially form the basis of a marketing campaign.
  • High priority market sectors, either by region, user base, or service, that require further attention and specific analysis in the application market analysis activity.

The separation of market sectors enables the identification of market-specific planning and infrastructure decisions in each region. The separation by service (eg SOL, Commercial, Open Access, EGNOS SIS, EGNOS SISNeT, GPS) allows the identification of likely service differentiators and a focus for Galileo/EGNOS market development activities.

For each region, this activity assesses the applicability of previous European market analyses and identifies key differences in terms of application base, market size, etc. This ensures that any previous work undertaken for the European market may be re-used if applicable.

As the application market analysis progressed, the key issues and highlights were transferred to the Applications and Services Development Plan. Our approach shares this document with the GJU at regular intervals, in order to discuss key issues and outcomes. This means that the GJU is always kept fully informed and is able to make forward planning decisions as required.

Benefits

This activity will provide the GJU with:

  • A critical analysis of existing activities at international level including other initiatives of potential relevance.
Strategic guidance and recommendations for areas, applications and different geographical regions, which shall lead to the penetration of EGNOS/Galileo.
  • An action plan including identification of short and long-term objectives for further development.
  • A populated database tool based on a common template for the assessment of applications.
